Run a backup now

One click on a site’s Backups page. It starts within a minute.

Updated Oct 11, 2026

  1. Open the site and click Backups in the sidebar.
  2. Click Back up now.

The button shows each stage as it runs: Queued, Pulling files, Pulling database, then Encrypting & uploading. You can leave the page; the backup keeps going.

A small site’s first backup takes a few minutes. Later backups usually take under a minute.

Only one backup, restore or update runs on a site at a time. If one is running, wait for it to finish.

If WP Foreman’s backup server is short on space, a backup can stay at Queued for a while. It waits and tries again every 30 minutes, for up to 6 hours, instead of failing. If a backup is interrupted partway, it’s marked as failed within a couple of hours so the site carries on, and the next backup picks up where it left off.

Back up before you change anything big. Rivet, the Updater, can take one automatically before every update. See Safe updates.
