Safe updates

Backup, screenshot, update, compare. If a page looks different afterwards, you're told, and the backup is ready to restore.

Updated Oct 11, 2026

Lockup and the Inspector work together on this one. Before an update, the site is backed up and its key pages are screenshotted; after it, the pages are screenshotted again and compared, so a broken layout shows up before your client spots it.

What happens on each update

  1. Backup. With Back up before updates and deletes on (the default), Lockup backs up the site first. If the backup fails, nothing is changed. A backup from the last 15 minutes covers the next update too. Updates from a rule always back up first.
  2. Before screenshots. The Inspector screenshots your checked pages on desktop and mobile, unless it already took some in the last 30 minutes.
  3. Update. The plugin, theme or WordPress update runs.
  4. After screenshots. A minute later the Inspector screenshots the same pages and compares. Several updates in a row share one after-check.

If something looks different

Pages that changed 2% or more are listed under Needs you in your morning report and flagged on the site’s Overview until someone clicks Looks fine. Rules can react to it too, for example to email you. See Visual checks.

Nothing is rolled back automatically. If an update did break something, restore the pre-update backup from the Backups page in a couple of clicks.

Screenshots need visual checks switched on for the site (they are by default, under Site settings › Features). Without them you still get the backup first.
